While Bali is famous for its beauty, rich culture, and warm-hearted people, it also faces a heartbreaking issue: a growing population of stray animals, left behind and often invisible to the world.
But where systems fail, individuals can shine. And on one unforgettable night, a young man did just that.
The Night That Changed Everything
Rico Soegiarto, a 26-year-old walking home through Denpasar, saw something that stopped him in his tracks.
Lying in the middle of the road was a husky so emaciated, she was barely more than a skeleton. Her fur had fallen out in patches, her body riddled with sores and scabs.
She looked like a ghost—a once-beautiful dog on the brink of death.
But her eyes told a different story. Despite her condition, they shone—a pale, icy blue filled with exhaustion and pain, but still clinging to something rare: hope.
Rico couldn’t walk away. He later said, “I don’t know what made me stop. It was just a feeling—something in my heart.” And that was enough.
Without hesitation, he lifted the broken husky into his arms and took her home. He named her Hope—a name she would come to embody.
A Fight Against the Clock
Hope was hanging by a thread.
She was dangerously underweight, riddled with infections, and suffering from neglect that had taken both a physical and emotional toll. Her recovery wouldn’t be easy, but Rico was determined.
Over the next ten months, Rico gave Hope everything he had—veterinary care, nourishing food, gentle grooming, and, above all, love.
He was patient when she was afraid. He held her when she was weak. He stayed by her side when healing seemed out of reach.
Hope no longer had to scavenge for scraps or hide from people. She was safe, she was fed, and—maybe for the first time—she was truly cared for.
The Transformation of a Warrior
Slowly, something extraordinary happened.
Her fur began to return, soft and full. The bony outlines of her ribs disappeared beneath healthy weight. Her wounds healed, and her posture straightened.
But the most beautiful transformation of all was in her eyes.

Today, they care for five rescued dogs, including Hope.
Hope, once frail and forgotten, is now playful, affectionate, and full of joy. She adores being petted, sneaks treats whenever she can, and has become the soul of a very happy family.
