The Stray Who Almost Lost Hope
Every shelter dog dreams of a moment when someone finally sees them — truly sees them — and chooses to love them. For Hogan, a gentle and affectionate Pit Bull, that dream felt painfully out of reach.
Hogan was found wandering the streets of California and brought into a shelter on November 1st, 2018. He spent those first few days hoping that the right person would recognize the kindness in his eyes. But as the days passed, no one came for him.
By November 6th, his stray hold ended, and Hogan was officially available for adoption. Still, the kennel doors stayed closed. The people who walked by didn’t notice the quiet dog sitting deep in the corner, trying to make himself invisible.
As more days passed, Hogan’s hope began to crumble. The shelter placed him on the euthanasia list, crushing the little faith he had left. Hogan retreated into himself — trembling, whimpering, and crying alone in the back of his kennel. He had so much love to give, yet no one had given him a chance.
His world felt small, cold, and silent.
He was running out of time.

A Lifeline Arrives in the Nick of Time
Just when everything seemed lost, a spark of hope appeared.
Volunteers from Saving Riverside Shelter Dogs learned about Hogan’s situation. They refused to let another sweet soul disappear unnoticed. Determined to save him, they contacted Ozzy And Friends Rescue – Save A Life in Inglewood, California.
The rescue team didn’t hesitate. They rushed to pick him up — a decision that would change everything.
When Hogan stepped into the rescue vehicle, something inside him shifted. Maybe it was the softness of their voices, or the warmth of hands that held him with gentleness instead of fear. Maybe he simply felt safe for the first time in months.
His tail began to wag.
His eyes softened.
He even reached out to lick their hands, as if saying, “Thank you for not giving up on me.”
It was the first glimmer of happiness he had shown in a very long time.
Learning to Live Again at the Rescue
Life at Ozzy And Friends Rescue was completely different from the shelter.
Here, Hogan wasn’t overlooked. He wasn’t forgotten. He wasn’t a number on a list — he was a dog worth loving.
But his journey wasn’t simple. Hogan struggled around other animals and preferred having his own space. The rescue staff quickly realized he needed a home where he could be the only dog, receiving all the attention he had been denied for so long.
Slowly, his personality began to blossom.
He enjoyed the sunshine, the open space, and every bit of affection the caregivers offered. His confidence grew with each passing day. Hogan started wagging his tail more, playing more, trusting more.
The rescue gave Hogan what every dog deserves:
Time. Patience. Compassion.
And a real chance to be seen.

Years of Waiting… and Hoping
Despite his progress, finding a forever home was difficult.
Days turned into months.
Months turned into years.
While other dogs were adopted — tails high, smiles wide — Hogan remained behind, watching them leave one by one. He celebrated their happiness, yet deep inside, he longed for someone to choose him too.
The volunteers adored him, but they knew he needed a very specific home:
A home with patience.
A home with understanding.
A home where he could be the center of someone’s world.
Even after years of disappointment, Hogan never fully lost hope. His gentle heart stayed open, waiting for the right person to finally walk into his life.
And eventually… that person did.
A Foster Home That Became Forever

In 2021, Hogan met the person who would change his destiny.
Evelyn Perez-Benitez agreed to foster him — not knowing that this one decision would lead to the greatest gift for both of them. The plan was simple: give Hogan a quiet home away from the busy rescue so he could relax and shine.
The moment they met, something beautiful sparked.
Hogan slowly came out of his shell. He learned to trust Evelyn, to lean on her, to enjoy gentle touches and playful moments. Walks became bonding time. Cuddles became routine. Every day, Evelyn fell more deeply in love with the loyal dog who just wanted someone to stay.
It didn’t take long for her to realize the truth:
Hogan wasn’t going anywhere — except home with her.
In April 2022, she officially adopted him, giving him the forever home he had been waiting for since 2018.
After years of heartbreak, Hogan finally belonged.
Embracing a Life Filled With Love and Adventure

Today, Hogan’s life is completely transformed.
Gone are the lonely days of kennel tears.
Gone is the fear of being forgotten.
Gone is the uncertainty of every tomorrow.
In Evelyn’s home, Hogan thrives.
He spends his days exploring the outdoors, going on hikes, splashing in the water, and enjoying every bit of freedom he once lost. His confidence shines brighter than ever, and his playful spirit makes everyone around him smile.
Evelyn gives him everything he needs — not just food and shelter, but love, safety, and joy.
“I do everything I can for him. I want to give him the best life possible because he is my family,” she says.
And Hogan shows his gratitude every single day with affection, loyalty, and a heart full of trust.
